Flash developer. 13 years' experience.
If you’re looking for a Flash freelancer you’ve come to the right place.
I’ve been using Flash since 1998 (Flash 3) and I’ve worked for numerous digital agencies both in the UK and internationally since this time. I’ve produced creative content for many brands, large and small, including Hewlett Packard, Nokia, Total, Disney and Orange.
I’ve also worked on regionalised banners for the Bond film Quantum of Solace, developed a site for one of Ireland’s leading film makers, a site for a leading London media agency and made numerous games for the BBC (one of which you can see being played here by none other than pop star Taylor Swift!).
What’s Flash?
Adobe Flashâ„¢ is the market leading software for the creation of rich media, future-proof websites – truly engaging user experiences allowing embedded video, audio and dynamic data. ActionScript is its programming language – now vast and extremely powerful, akin to Java. The Flash Player (required to view content) is the most popular browser plug-in in Internet history, already installed on over 99% of Internet enabled computers. Flash brings sites alive.
Multi-skilled
When I say I am a Flash developer, that’s not the whole story. If you look to the right you can see a list of all my skills, and my attainment level of each. These range from Photoshop to Drupal.
While I am used to writing many thousands of lines of code (mainly ActionScript code), I started out as a designer (and advertising copywriter) and fully appreciate the importance of a suitable “look and feel” for an application or website. I am actually an all-rounder, capable of working as part of a team or indeed taking on an entire project on my own, from the design right through to the database connectivity and server administration.
When you hire me, you effectively hire 4 people for the price of one.
I love what I do and seek to achieve originality and quality in every project. You can see examples of my development work in the Portfolio section here.
Flash instructor
I’m not only a developer. Since 2001 I have also trained literally hundreds of people from all around Europe in my capacity as an Adobe Certified Instructor.
I am used to going into companies (or having delegates come to me) and bringing them up to speed on the latest techniques in Flash. This requires me to be sure of my facts, it requires excellent communication skills and the ability to get along with – and motivate – others.
If you require training in any aspect of Flash, take a look at my Training section here, where there is more information about my services.
Circumstances in which you might hire me
You might be in any of the following positions:
- You’re preparing for an upcoming project – it’s needs to be made (and made well) in Flash and you lack the in-house skills.
- You’re tired of being let down by your current Flash developer.
- You think you might be being overcharged by your current Flash developer.
- You’ve inherited legacy code which is proving a nightmare to work with. You need it cleaning up and amending, fast.
- You need a refresher on how to achieve certain things with ActionScript.
- You have staff who are otherwise fine, but who need Flash coding adding to their skill-set.
If your scenario matches any of the above, I can solve your problem. Just get in touch and I will be happy to discuss possibilities with you.
Why me?
Client recommendation:“I have known Gavin since attending one of his actionscript training classes in 2004. He was such a good trainer, I asked if he’d like to do some contract work and he has been providing services to KLP ever since and is now a very capable high end AS3 developer (amongst other things).
If there’s one thing I’d say about Gavin it’s that he always goes that little bit further (often working nights unpaid) to ensure the job is nothing short of perfect. He has a huge amount of integrity and professionalism and understands the technology and it’s possibilities very well. He understands and adheres to the working ethic ‘Never make compromises’.”

Guarantee
In my non-professional life I often find myself dealing with companies who say they are going to call back, then don’t, or say something is fit for use and it turns out it isn’t. Or they carry out a job doing the bare minimum of work and then demand payment, relying on the anonymity of the city.
I guarantee my work. I work to written agreements where my obligations are made clear. I always offer free technical support following my work. In the rare event of errors in my code, these are fixed free of charge. I am scrupulously courteous and I keep my clients informed, as I would like to be.
I am not happy unless I produce work which I know is excellent and – most of all – I appreciate that in work, as in life generally, reputation is everything.
Try me, and work with someone who cares as much as you do about the quality of the work.
